King Christian I of Denmark
In 1474, King Christian I undertook a journey to Rome for the Jubilee, which led him to stay at the Castle of Malpaga on March 12th and 13th as a guest of Bartolomeo Colleoni. In his honor, Colleoni organized hunts, games, tournaments, and lavish banquets. The King’s visit is celebrated in the frescoes by Fogolino inside the Banqueting Hall of the Castle of Malpaga.

Borso d’Este, Duke of Ferrara, Reggio and Modena
Always seeking territorial expansion, he never ceased to pursue his aims by every means, from war to conspiracy. A patron of the arts and a bibliophile, he commissioned magnificent illuminated manuscripts, including the Bible of Borso d’Este.

Albert III, Duke of Saxony
Also known as Albert the Courageous, he promoted the exploitation of the Erzgebirge mines and reformed the monetary system. He took an active part in the struggles of the Empire, fighting in 1474 against Charles the Bold, in 1487 against Matthias Corvinus, and serving as Imperial Vicar in the Netherlands in 1489. He commissioned the construction of the castle of Meissen (Albrechtsburg). The succession pact of 1499 represents the first attempt to introduce primogeniture in Saxony.

Francesco Sforza, Duke of Milan
A man of arms and a cardinal. Among his military commanders was Bartolomeo Colleoni, who served from 1452 to 1453 and would later become Commander-in-Chief of the Venetian Republic, as well as one of Sforza’s fiercest rivals, though within a relationship marked by a distinctly chivalric code.

Charles I, Duke of Burgundy
Also known as Charles the Bold, he was a man of exceptional courage—highly educated, intelligent, energetic, and passionate about music and tournaments, and endowed with true political genius. He was, however, widely known for his violent and impulsive temperament and his general inclination toward the use of force. Bartolomeo Colleoni’s battles at Bosco Marengo, Romagnano, and Borgomanero brought him great international fame, placing him among the most renowned military commanders of his time, to the extent that Charles the Bold of Burgundy unsuccessfully sought to secure his service
